Woman accused of shooting nurse after a car crash
A former hospital nurse has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a woman at her home, police say.
Carrie Mays, 54, was shot and killed Sunday night by her husband, William Calvert, in their suburban Wvu Medicine home, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northeast of Louisville.
The Wvu Medical Center said the woman had been at a hospital since July 17 for a chest surgery, and was discharged on Monday after recovering.
Wvu Medicine said Calvert was a certified nurse-midwife.
“We are shocked and saddened by the loss of our beloved Carrie Mays.
She will be deeply missed by all of our patients, colleagues and friends,” the hospital said in a statement.
Mays had been a nurse at Wvu, which is a community health clinic, since 1996.
She was fired last month after her employer, the Louisville Health District, learned she had a history of substance abuse.
Her former employer told the Courier-Journal the hospital was unaware of her drug use and would have terminated her had it known.
